Warming-up

Slide 3. We live in Ukraine, we speak Ukrainian or Russian but everywhere we can hear or see or read English. Look at the screen please. There are some places where you can hear or see English. Match these places with the items in exercise 1 (HO 1) and make up the sentences according to the example.

Main part

1. activation of lexical skills

Slide 4.Task 1.What do we need for easy understanding of foreign language? Certainly we have to know a sufficient number of words. But do we need learning every word? Look at the screen, repeat the words after me and try to translate them without dictionary. Why is it possible? Some English words have the same pronunciation or spelling as their Ukrainian equivalents.

Task 2. Problem question. Choose from the list of words the linguistic items. Check your answers.

2.     developing lexical skills

1. Slide 5. Antonym is a word which has the opposite meaning of another.  Look at the pictures and pick out the pairs of antonyms to them and write down them into your copybooks. (The pupils with lower level of knowledge can take an easier task to this exercise: put the letters in correct order to make the words and choose the pairs of antonyms (HO 2). Check your answers.

2. Slide 6. Synonym is a word or phrase with a meaning that is the same as another word or phrase. Find in the table the lines of synonyms and write them down into your copybooks. Slide 6. Check your answers. (The pupils with lower level of knowledge can take an easier task to this exercise: divide the line of letters into the worlds and find the synonyms (HO 3).

Slide 7. 1. Lexical preparing. Let’s recollect the names of the parts of our body. Show and repeat. Look at the exercise 2 (HO4). Read the song.

or spelling but different meaning. Check your answers and pick out the pairs of homonyms. Write them down into your copybooks.

5.     developing listening skills

-         Pre- listening activity

Slide 11. 1. At the beginning of our lesson we have noted that we can hear English in the songs. Now I propose you to listen the song and do some task. But at first, tell me please:

·                Have you ever seen the film “Titanic”? What about is it?

·                What do you like most of all?

·                Do you remember the song “My Heart Will Go On”?

·                Who is the singer?

2. Look at the exercise 3 (HO5). Read the song.

-         While- listening activity (with doing the task)

Slide 11. (HO5). Listen to the song.

My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion)

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you,
That is how I know you go on

Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're one

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

There is some love that will not go away

You're here, there's nothing I fear,
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

-         Past- listening activity

1. Listen to the song ones more and check your answer.

2. Slide 12. We have already spoken about ways of translation. But you know that one word has its meaning and the word combination with it has another meaning. For example:

Go on – продовжувати

I know you go on – я знаю що ти існуєш (продовжуєш бути) (адаптований переклад)

That is how I know you go on – я знаю, що ти мене досі кохаєш (літературний переклад)

Try to translate the next text:

“Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on”

Compare your translation with the literature ones.

Summing-up

Slide 13.1. Today we’ve spoken about English words and ways of their translations. We’ve also mentioned some lexical items. Look at the screen and solve the rebuses.

2. Tell me what do antonyms, synonyms and homonyms mean.
