Grammar:
as + adjective / adverb + as (as + прикметник / прислівник + as – такий же ___, як і___) використовується для порівняння схожих якостей.

James is as tall as his older sister. - Джеймс такий же високий, як і його старша сестра.
The world’s biggest bull is as big as a small elephant. - Найбільший бик у світі завбільшки з маленького слона.
The weather this summer is as bad as last year. - Погода цього літа така ж погана, як і минулого року.

not as / so+ adjective / adverb + as (not as/ so + прикметник / прислівник + as – не такий ___, як ___)  використовується для порівняння несхожих якостей

She is not so good in cooking as her mother. – Вона не так добре готує, як її мати.
Paris is not as big as Tokyo. – Париж не такий великий, як Токіо.

Завжди доречно урізноманітнювати своє мовлення порівняльними зворотами:

Liz is as busy as a bee. – Ліз працьовита як бджілка
George was as quiet as a sleeping cat. – Джордж був тихий як миша
Tim was as scared as a rabbit. – Тім був полохливий як заєць

As … as + possibility  (якомога + прислівник) використовується для вираження можливості або здатності щось зробити певним чином.

Can you come as soon as possible? - Ви можете прийти якомога швидше?
Go to as many places as you can. - Вирушай в якомога більше місць.
We got here as fast as we could. - Ми дісталися сюди так швидко, як могли.

As much as, as many as
as much as (з незлічуваними іменниками) і as many as (із злічувальними іменниками) використовується для порівняння кількості.

Greg makes as much money as Mick but not as much as Neil.
They try to give them as much freedom as they can.
There weren’t as many people there as I expected.

as much as and as many as перед числівником використовується, щоб позначити велику кількість чогось:

Scientists have discovered a planet which weighs as much as 2,500 times the weight of Earth. - Вчені виявили планету, яка важить в 2500 разів більше ваги Землі.
There were as many as 50 people crowded into the tiny room. - У крихітній кімнаті було скупчено аж 50 людей.

1. Read and translate

Bob is as clever as Alex.
Her room is as clean as mine.
Is Vietnam as hot as the Philippines?
Is Ana as friendly as her sister?
Watermelons are not as sweet as mangos.
Today is not as sunny as yesterday.

Hyun-woo: This coat is so cheap! It's just as pretty as the first one, too.
Grace: But is it as warm as the first one?
Hyun-woo: You're right. It does not seem as warm.

Sarah: I love math.
Liam: Really? I don't think math is as interesting as English.
Sarah: That's why you're not as good as I am at math!

Manager: What do you think about the people we interviewed today?
Walter: Mark is not as smart as Tiffany, but Tiffany did not seem as proactive.

2. Rephrasing sentences

New York is equally humid compared to Tokyo. - New York is as humid as Tokyo.
He is smart like Einstein.
Your English is just like a native speaker's!
My luggage is lighter than your bag.
My house is closer to the subway station than hers.
Ann has got eyes of the same colour as John’s.
Rose is taller than Cathy.
Linda has got curly hair. Mary has got curly hair, too.
Bill and Tom are good pupils.
My grandparents are older than yours.
Brenda is better at skating than Lisa

3. Match the words to make up a simile. Use them in sentences of your own (Ex.2, p. 46 by Oksana Karpiuk's textbook).
