Ways of Expressing the Future (способи вираження майбутнього часу)

В англійській мові є багато способів розповісти про майбутні події. Найпоширеніші з них:

1. Future Tenses (Simple, Continuous, Perfect) – миттєві спонтанні рішення, здогадки, передбачення, сподівання, прогнози, пропозиції, обіцянки, відмови, риси характеру

What will I do tomorrow? I know! I’ll go to the zoo.

2. Present Continuous – Завчасно запланована дія з вказівкою на точний час

 Emma is seeing Luke tomorrow.

3. Present Simple – розклад руху транспорту, уроків, спортивних подій, роботи установ та організацій

The train for Berlin leaves at midnight tonight.

4. to be going to – плани; припущення, які виникають з аналізу ситуації

Look at those black clouds; it is going to rain soon.

5. might, may – припущення

Peter might come over next week.

 

Серед менш уживаних виділяються:

6. be to + infinitive – плани або накази, про які оголошують у засобах масової інформації.

Downing Street announced this morning that the Prime Minister is to fly to Washington this evening for urgent talks about the current crisis.

7. to + infinitive – повідомлення у заголовках газет для якомога коротшого оприлюднення новин.

PM to fly to US.

У багатьох реченнях можуть бути використані декілька варіантів. Остаточний підсвідомий вибір способу вираження майбутнього часу робиться ораторами в момент виступу, і залежить від контексту ситуації, якою вони її бачать у той момент. Не думайте, що в будь-якій ситуації є одна, і лише одна, "правильна" форма.
